WHAT IF...

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”- Carl G. Jung

Human forms in my works attend to conduct the spectator to the construction of a story that is always complementing for other parallel stories. They disclose some clues through the use of written words embedded or even hidden, as well as iconographic references - never simple reproductions of original works, that is not of my interest -, allusions, winks, glimpses, breaths, recurrent quotes, subversions or footnotes. Some of these clues come from masterpieces and are incorporated into my work, which holds an own path and telos and plays freely the postmodern game of appropriation. Thus, I feel entitled to declare: “I’m everything I see, I don’t hide my influences, but rather play with them, and by that way, grant them a body, a being”.
Cristina de Guillot

Born in 1969, Cristina de Guillot has a long artistic career. She is part of the young generation of great artists in Venezuela

Cristina de Guillot answers our questions.

Why the title “What if”?
I like to imagine “What ifs…” It’s my way of expanding ideas, beyond philosophic thoughts is more an exercise of imagination, learn to capture them, cultivate and celebrate them.

What does your artwork say about you?
Each of us has a story. We are layed with multiple stories. Images from our personal life flash across our minds, conjuring emotions related to our experiences, an ideas for art making come to me from many sources. My own visual vocabulary is built upon words, found objects, images from the past and many icons in diversity of ways. But I don’t want to be exposed, or explain myself too much, I let the viewer guess and I accept every conclusion about.

It seems like you are searching for something…
Throughout my life I have documented my experiences realizing that memories fade over time, they are for me to unlock my inner artist, the childlike muse that needs to have free reign once in a while to just play...just to see what happens. That is an important goal as an artist: Enjoy the work as a child and never get tired of explore and study as an adult.
