The Alliance Française is back in Coral Gables for classes at the Institute for Cuban-American Studies on the UM campus.

Classes of 8 students maximum are going to opened for the younger ones (3-5 and 6-9 years old) and adult sessions.

The story of Saartjes Baartman, a Black domestic who, in 1808, left Southern Africa, then ruled by Dutch settlers, for Europe, following her boss Hendrick Caesar , hoping to find fame and fortune there. Once in London her master turned manager does nothing but exhibit her as a freak in a phony and humiliating carnival show. After a series of troubles caused by their act, Caesar, Saartje and their new friend, bear-tamer Réaux, head for Paris where once again, and against her will, she has to mimic savagery and expose her body, first in carnivals, then in the aristocratic salons of Paris, later on among the libertines and finally in brothels where she ends up being a prostitute. In the meantime, French anatomists will have taken an interest in her unusual anatomy (enormous buttocks and labia) only to declare her the missing link from ape to man. In 1815, aged only 27, she dies alone, of a combination of pneumonia and venereal disease.

JULES VERNE FAIT SON CINEMA

"Jules Verne fait son cinéma" is a monthly gathering designed for the young generation to discover cinema as an art, focusing this time on Jules Verne and its extraordinary voyages. Once a month, children witness not only an unforgettable experience to share with their friends, but also that of learning to read the images, thanks to a pedagogical introduction highlighting one or more of its characteristics and qualities.
Some pedagogical accompaniment will also be delivered to you in order to encourage the children to exchange thoughts and feelings after having watched the movie. Before the film, an hour of workshop will be provided by Frédéric Pruvost, teacher at ISCHS, to prepare the theme: from the attack of the octopus or a virtual visit of the Nautilus, the children will experiment Jules Verne’s innovative world.

APERO JAZZ COGNAC

The Apero Jazz is back.  A convivial evening outside on the Alliance Française terrace, where each and everyone is invited to enjoy music and wine. Jazz music is played live by a local jazz band and all the styles are represented: bossa-nova, standards, gipsy jazz…  During the last editions, we received the Eddie Balzola trio, the Roberto Rodriguez trio and the Frederico Britos trio. From an extra saxophonist to an accordeonist, the Apero Jazz is always full of surprises. It’s also an excellent occasion for networking and after-work parties.

LE COGNAC S'AFFICHE

Since the 18th century, Cognac Houses have worked with the most renowned graphic artists. The museums of the city of Cognac have selected some of their collections for the Alliance française.The exhibition of vintage reproductions of posters is devoted to the history of a century and a half of the Liquor of the Angels

FIU AMERNET STRING QUARTET CONCERT

FIU School of Music faculty members Dr. Joel Galand, Associate Professor of Music Theory, and the Amernet String Quartet, Ensemble-in-Residence, present an atelier focused upon Claude Debussy’s String quartet in g minor, Op.10. Together, they will place this groundbreaking work in historical context as a function of French artistic society at the time of its composition, while also analyzing it from a musical perspective. This will be followed by a concert performance of the complete work.

GOUTER PHILO

Have your children discuss issues for an hour, over cakes and fruit juice. The goûter allows children to expand their ability to think for themselves and to expand their critical thinking. PECHA KUTCHA

Pecha Kucha Night is a Japanese inspired networking event for creatives, designers and innovators to present their work in public. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat," it rests on a format of 20 images shown for 20 seconds each.  Each presenter has about seven minutes to talk which keeps the event moving and the interest level up. First devised in Tokyo in February 2003 there are now 470 cities around the world with a Pecha Kucha Night. Pecha Kucha Miami will showcase computer programming and animation technology trends from local talent as part of the Pecha Kucha Global Cities Week in the Alliance Française in Miami February 28 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
