Guided Tour in French: American Artist in Paris
Norton, 1451 S. Olive, West Palm Beach
Between 1830 and the early 1900's, doctors, writers (Henry James, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway), sculptors (Frederic MacMonnies, Paul Manship), painters (Childe Hassam, Alfred Maurer, Charles Demuth), and many others set sail across the Atlantic for the "City of Light".
They would flourish in Paris, inspired by brilliant French masters and the excitement of living in Paris.
American artists learned that modernism was a revolt against the conservative schools, and a rejection of tradition. Over the years, these Americanartists met Monet, Matisse and Picasso among other artists and developed their own version of Impressionism, Post Impressionism and more modern styles. They met frequently in the Salon of American writer, Gertrude Stein, and her brother Leo.We are going to explore the world and work of these artists and their impact upon American Art of the 20th Century.
